  1. Open an app with a text field, such as Messages, Gmail, Keep, OneNote, or WhatsApp.

If you do not see a microphone, check the keyboard's voice-input setting and its Android microphone permission. Menu names differ by device, so use the Settings search box for voice typing, voice input, or keyboard list and default if the path below is not available.

Simple rule: use keyboard dictation when you want words in an app, Live Transcribe when you need to read speech as it happens, and a recorder when you need to keep the audio and revisit the transcript later.

How to Use Gboard Voice Typing

Google's Gboard instructions say voice typing works in most places where you can type. Open the keyboard, tap its microphone, wait for the listening prompt, and speak. You can say punctuation such as "comma," "question mark," or "new line" where supported.

Enable the microphone in Gboard

  1. Open an app that brings up Gboard.
  2. Open Gboard settings from the keyboard toolbar or Android Settings.
  3. Select Voice typing and turn on the available voice-input option.
  4. Go to Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone and allow microphone access while using the app.

Switch dictation languages

Add the language to Gboard first, then switch the keyboard to that language before dictating. Gboard notes that voice typing is not available in every language. If recognition repeatedly uses the wrong language, match the active keyboard language to the language you are speaking rather than relying on automatic detection.

Voice-to-Text on Google Pixel

Pixel phones can use standard Gboard dictation, and Pixel 6 or newer models can use advanced voice typing in supported languages. Advanced voice typing can keep the microphone active while you edit text, add punctuation automatically, and apply certain spoken commands.

Do not assume every Pixel has the same command set. Google's current documentation limits detailed text-editing voice commands to Pixel 8 and newer in US English. Newer writing-tool commands have separate Pixel model and language requirements. Supported advanced voice-typing languages currently include English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, but availability can still depend on the device and region.

Turn on advanced voice typing

  1. Open an app and bring up Gboard.
  2. Open Gboard Settings > Voice typing.
  3. Turn on Advanced voice typing if the switch appears.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi and allow the required language resources to finish downloading.

If the option disappears or stops working, update Gboard and Android System Intelligence, make sure your primary device language matches a supported Gboard language, restart the phone, and reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Voice-to-Text on Samsung Galaxy

Samsung Galaxy phones can offer both Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing. According to Samsung's current setup guide, open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default to enable available input services. To select the service used by Samsung Keyboard, open Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input.

  1. Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default.
  2. Enable Samsung voice input, Google Voice Typing, or both if your phone lists them.
  3. Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input and choose the preferred service.
  4. Open a text field, tap the keyboard microphone, and dictate a short test sentence.

If the microphone is not visible, look in the Samsung Keyboard toolbar or tap the toolbar's more-options icon. Interface placement can change with One UI updates and toolbar customization.

How to Use Voice-to-Text Offline on Android

Offline speech-to-text is not one universal Android switch. It depends on the selected speech service, installed language data, device model, and the app receiving the text. Download the language before you lose connectivity and test the exact workflow in airplane mode.

Samsung offline voice input

Samsung documents downloadable offline language packs for Samsung voice input on compatible devices. Open the Samsung voice-input settings and look for Offline language packs. Download the language you plan to use while connected to Wi-Fi.

Live Transcribe offline mode

Google Live Transcribe supports offline transcription on selected devices and languages. Google currently lists offline transcription on all Pixel devices running Android 12 or newer, with more limited support on selected Android 8 through Android 11 devices. Download the offline language from Live Transcribe settings before it is needed.

On-device Voice Access recognition

On Android 13 and newer, Google's Voice Access guidance points to Settings > System > Languages & input > On-device recognition or a similar Language & region > Speech path, depending on the Android build. Downloaded on-device recognition is primarily for supported accessibility voice controls; it does not guarantee that every keyboard or third-party app will dictate offline.

Before traveling: download the language, restart the phone, enable airplane mode, and dictate into the intended app. A downloaded language pack is only useful if that app and voice service actually select it.

How to Transcribe Long Recordings on Android

Keyboard voice typing is designed to enter text, not to create a reliable archive of a long meeting. It can pause when the keyboard closes, the screen locks, another app takes focus, or the voice service times out. For interviews, lectures, depositions, and meetings, use a recorder that saves the audio alongside the transcript.

Pixel Recorder

Google Recorder on supported Pixel devices can record and transcribe audio, search transcripts, and edit a recording from its waveform or transcript. Google documents recordings of up to 18 hours, although storage, battery, heat, and app state still matter. Recorder can also be used without a Google Account so recordings remain local to the device unless you choose to back them up or share them.

On Pixel 6 and newer devices, speaker labels are available for US English. Google says the labeling process happens on the device. Review speaker names and technical terms before treating the transcript as final.

Other Android phones

Samsung Voice Recorder features vary by Galaxy model and software version. Other phones may include a manufacturer recorder without transcription, or they may require a separate recording app. Compare the recording itself, export format, transcript availability, offline behavior, and privacy terms before using an app for important work. Use Voice-to-Text in WhatsApp, Messages, and Notes

To dictate a text message in WhatsApp, Google Messages, Gmail, OneNote, or a notes app, tap the message field and use the keyboard microphone. This is different from the app's audio-message or voice-note button:

  • Keyboard microphone: converts your speech into editable text before you send it.
  • App voice-message button: records audio for the recipient to play.
  • Recorder app: saves a separate audio file and may create a transcript.

If tapping the wrong microphone starts an audio message, stop and use the microphone inside Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, or SwiftKey instead. Always review dictated text before sending, especially when it includes names, dates, addresses, or financial details.

How to Improve Android Speech-to-Text Accuracy

  1. Select the correct language. The active keyboard language should match the spoken language and regional variant.
  2. Reduce distance and background noise. Keep the phone close enough for clear speech, but do not blow directly into the microphone.
  3. Speak in complete phrases. A steady pace gives the recognizer more context than isolated words.
  4. Say punctuation only when supported. Test "comma," "period," and "new line" before relying on voice commands.
  5. Check the phone case and microphone openings. A blocked microphone can affect every recording and dictation app.
  6. Review proper nouns and numbers. Contact names, acronyms, product codes, and mixed-language phrases are common error points.
  7. Use a dedicated microphone for distant speakers. Software cannot reconstruct speech that the phone never captured clearly.

Fix Android Voice-to-Text Not Working

Work through these checks in order. Test after each step so you know which change solved the problem.

  1. Confirm the keyboard microphone is enabled. In Gboard, check Settings > Voice typing. On Samsung, check General management > Keyboard list and default.
  2. Allow microphone permission. Open Settings > Apps > Gboard or the selected keyboard, then allow microphone access while using the app.
  3. Check Android's privacy microphone control. Quick Settings can disable microphone access for all apps on some Android versions.
  4. Match the language. Add the spoken language to the keyboard and make it active before dictating.
  5. Update the keyboard and speech components. Update Gboard, Google, Android System Intelligence, Samsung Keyboard, or the relevant service through Google Play or Galaxy Store.
  6. Restart the phone. This can reload a stuck microphone or speech service.
  7. Test another app. If dictation works in Keep but not in one banking or password field, that app may block voice input for security.
  8. Clear Gboard's cache. Google's Gboard troubleshooting guide recommends clearing cache before clearing app data. Clearing data resets Gboard settings.
  9. Test the microphone with Recorder or Camera. If every app records silence or distorted audio, investigate the device microphone rather than voice typing.

Why did the microphone icon disappear?

The voice-input service may be disabled, microphone permission may have been removed, the keyboard toolbar may be collapsed, or a work profile or managed device policy may block dictation. On Samsung Keyboard, inspect the toolbar's additional controls. On Gboard, reopen Voice typing settings and confirm that the selected keyboard is still Gboard.

Android Speech-to-Text API for Developers

Android's SpeechRecognizer API exposes both the default recognition service and, on supported devices, an on-device recognizer. Before creating the on-device version, call SpeechRecognizer.isOnDeviceRecognitionAvailable(context). That availability check and createOnDeviceSpeechRecognizer(context) require API level 31 or newer.

A production implementation must request RECORD_AUDIO, create and call the recognizer on the main thread, handle errors and partial results, and call destroy() when finished. Android's documentation warns that the general recognizer may stream audio to remote servers and is not intended for continuous recognition because of battery and bandwidth costs. For API level 33 and newer, recognition-support APIs can help inspect installed and supported languages.

For continuous meeting transcription, do not treat SpeechRecognizer as a drop-in recording engine. Design explicit session limits, preserve the original audio when appropriate, show the user when the microphone is active, and disclose whether processing is on-device or remote.

A dedicated recorder is useful when the phone must remain available for calls, navigation, slides, or other work; when a meeting is too long for keyboard dictation; or when keeping the source audio is essential. Do not assume that every Android speech feature is processed locally. Get appropriate permission before recording other people.
